Men's Wrestling Takes on Concordia University

GOODLAND, KS- The Northwest Tech Mavericks had a busy weekend that started Friday against the 17th NAIA ranked Concordia Bulldogs.  Concordia is the three time defending champions of their conference and had a 13 match home winning streak that spanned a couple years before the Mavericks came into town.  With a pin by Nartorian "Tank" Lee in the last match the Mavericks pulled of a 23-21 win to snap that streak. Odgerel Batkhishig also had a first period fall for the Mavericks and Tate Withington won by a technical fall over his opponent when his lead extended to over 15 points.  Munkhbat "Muugi" Bat-Erdene and Joseph White also had wins in the dual for the Mavericks over top 10 ranked NAIA opponents.

 

On Saturday the Mavericks traveled a short way from Concordia University to compete in the Doane Open.  The team continued there successful season here.  Odgerel "Odgi" Batkhishig continued to add to his impressive career with another tournament win this time in the finals by a major decision over a 3x All American from Concordia.  Odgi also had two wins over wrestlers representing or attending the University of Nebraska.  Muugi joined his countrymen in the finals before falling to two time NJCAA National Finalist Zak Hensley who now wrestles for the University of Nebraska 5-2.  Tate Withington also went 5-1 on the day to finish 3rd only losing to the eventual champion from Division 1 Nebraska Mitch Maginnis 11-3.  Bo Ellis recorded his first victory there over Simon Bassett of Pratt.   Jaron Christensen also got his first career pin this weekend.  Wrestling unattached Jesus "Freddy" Morales went 3-2 on the day as well.  Caleb Mendez also had 3 victories at 157 pounds for the team.
