The Lady Mavericks Softball Team Makes School History
GOODLAND, KS- The Mavericks Softball team arrived in La Junta, Colorado on February 3rd, 2018 to participate in the first inaugural game since the Maverick Softball program had been stood up at Northwest Tech. With a goal as a team to win the first spring game, the Mavericks Softball team came out with fire in their hearts and went on to make history in game one. Not only would this be the first win for the team; but it would also be the first win in school history for the Maverick Softball program.
The Mavericks stepped on Otero's field with a will to win. Erika Silva led off the game with a triple off the right field wall and set up her team for a successful first inning offensively. Immediately following Silva's triple, Makenna Shaw hit a triple, again, off the right field wall to score Silva from third base. Continuing to see the ball well, Alexis Perez followed up those triples with a single to score Shaw. The Mavericks went on to bat the entire lineup that inning, mustering up 7 hits, and scoring 4 runs on no errors.
The second inning of the game Silva led off again with a single to left field. She went on to go 2 for 4 in game one. Getting another hit in the second inning and her final hit in 5th inning, Shaw went on to be 3 for 4 in game one. Perez walked in the 2nd inning and went 2 for 2 in the first game. Sirena Rosalez and Kamryn Frisk would also go on to be 2 for 3 at the plate in the first game against Otero.
The score in just the second inning against Otero was now 5-0 in the Maverick's favor, when Sirena Rosalez crushed one off the right field fence. The ball hit to top of the fence and bounced back into play; resulting in a Rosalez triple, and the third triple of the game.
After scoring 4 runs in the second inning, and having a quiet third inning at the plate, the Maverick put the hurting back on Otero in the fourth inning crossing 3 more runs over the plate. These 3 runs came from a monster homerun by Kamryn Frisk.
Shae Muggridge was on the mound for the Mavericks and got the win throwing only 66 pitches. She had 5 strike-outs, and allowed only 3 runs on 6 hits. The game did not see the full 7 innings, as the Mavericks run-ruled the Otero Rattlers in just 5 innings 11-3.
The Mavericks began game 2 the same way they started game 1; scoring 5 runs on 6 hits in the first inning. The Mavericks batted through the entire line up again in the first inning. Shaw and Rosalez both hit doubles in the first inning, followed by another Frisk homerun over the left field fence. Shaw and and Rosalez would also both go on to hit homeruns in the 4th inning of game two.
After a rough first 2 innings defensively, the Mavericks got behind quickly as the Rattlers scored 12 runs in the first 2 innings of game 2. After an unsuccessful comeback rally attempt the Mavericks would go on to lose game two 11-13 in 7 innings to Otero.
The Mavericks scored 22 combined runs as a team in their first outing with 2 doubles, 3 triples, and 4 homeruns.
The Mavericks Softball team was scheduled to play on February 4th against Otero, however, it was cancelled due to low temperatures and inclement weather. Those games will be rescheduled for a later date.
