Northwest Tech Wins First Round of Region VI Tournament

Northwest Tech Men's Basketball won over the Dodge City Conqs, 85-74, in the first round of the Region VI Tournament on Saturday.

The game kicked off to a quick start, with the Mavs scoring back-to-back buckets before the Conqs got their offense going. The rest of the first half would be an aggressive back-and-forth, with both teams pushing the ball up and down the court. The Mavs did a good job of forcing turnovers on defense; however, they gave up quite a few possessions themselves. Dodge would gain a 10-point lead around the eight-minute mark before the Mavericks quickly tied the game. The half would end with Tech down 42-45.

In the second half, Dodge got out to a quick start this time, scoring eight points unanswered. The Mavs would then go on an 11-2 run to tie the game up, 55-55, around the 14-minute mark. Both teams would continue to be competitive until the last three minutes when the Conqs could not score on the Mavericks' defense while the Mavs separated themselves by seven points. Then, in the final minute, things would completely fall apart for the Conqs as Northwest Tech capitalized off of back-to-back turnovers, sealing the win with consecutive dunks.

Looking at the stats, the Mavericks had three players in double figures, first with Keyishon Miller scoring a 19-point, 12-rebound double-double while also reaching a milestone of 1000 career points during the game. Charles Fofanah led the way in scoring with 28 points while shooting 60% from beyond the arc. Emarquis Jones was also in double figures with 12 points.

Coming up next, the Mavs travel down to Arkansas City on Tuesday to face the No. 2 seeded Cowley Tigers and look to extend their five-game winning streak.
