Late equalizer earns Maverick men 1-1 draw at CU-Denver

The Northwest Kansas Technical College Mavericks scored a late set-piece goal to earn a 1-1 draw at the University of Colorado-Denver Thursday night.

The Mavs dominated possession in the first half, with sophomore Kevin Foster and freshman Greg Williams and Lucas Christian generating dangerous chances to no avail. The game went tied 0-0 into halftime.

The Mavs conceded an early penalty to the Lynx, and CU-Denver took the lead 1-0 in the opening ten minutes of the second half. The Mavs found their equalizer in the 67th minute off a set piece from left of goal. Freshman Lucas Christian drove a ball into the box and freshman Brad Taberner scored from the flick of his right foot to tie the game at one goal apiece.

It is the second consecutive year the Lynx and Mavs have played to a tie. Head coach Danny Main said the game was about more than a result, though, with several players making comeback appearances from injury.

"It was good to get a sense of how deep our team really is because we've been without some of our roster due to injuries," Main said.  "Thursday was also a good chance to see a team in CU-Denver who plays a different style than what we are used to, so it was good to adjust and get out of our comfort zone."
