Mavs late rally falls short in 3-2 loss at Hastings College
Northwest Kansas Technical College (2-2-1) nearly overcame a three-goal deficit at NAIA power Hastings College, falling in dramatic fashion 3-2 at the final whistle.
The Mavericks trailed 2-0 at halftime, and a penalty kick was award to Hastings in the second half to make the score 3-0. But the Mavs dominated possession in the second half and kept the Broncos on the back foot.
Their efforts were rewarded around the 70th minute when Northwest Tech earned a free kick. Freshman Lucas Christian drove a ball towards the box, linking up with fellow Grand Cayman-native sophomore Kevin Foster, who flicked a header on to freshman Bradley Taberner (2) for the bottom corner finish.
It's the second goal of the year for Taberner and the third assist of the campaign for Christian.
Freshman Patryk Cichosz tallied his first goal of the season in the 84th minute after taking on three Hastings defenders and then beating the keeper near post.
The Mavs continued to press the tempo and almost pulled out a miracle equalizer in the final two minutes but the Hastings keeper came up with two saves.
"It's a great opportunity to play one of the top NAIA programs in the country," head coach Danny Main said postgame. "Our second half work rate was great. We feel like we dominated play but unfortunately we couldn't grab a result."
Hastings College is a perennial top 25 team of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. Hastings is off to a 6-0 start this season, including two wins already over ranked opponents.
The Mavericks and Lady Maverick's return to action Saturday afternoon for Jayhawk Conference play against Dodge City Community College. The Lady Mavs start at 1pm MT and the men will follow at 3pm MT in Goodland, Kansas.
