Mavs Roll Over Hesston 4-0 to Open Conference Play

Saturday, September 8th - Hesston, Kansas

The Northwest Kansas Tech Mavs mens soccer team headed to Hesston, Kansas as they opened up their conference play in style beating Hesston on Saturday. From start to finish, the Mavs moved the ball and controlled the game, tallying 12 shots on target and scoring 4 goals, while also keeping their first clean sheet of the season. ?I was very impressed by the way we moved the ball, we are starting to find our identity and what better time than at the start of conference play,? exclaimed Head Coach Jordan Rideout ?we know what it takes to play well and get results, today we showed that? Rideout continued.

The scoring opened in style as Sophomore winger Bidhan Rai (1) hit an absolute rocket of a volley from 25 yards out into the top corner. The Mavs built out of the back, completing 7 passes before the ball fell to Rai who smashed it home to put the Mavs up 1-0.

Later in the first half, Sophomore midfielder Darius Rashid was brought down in the box which resulted in a Mavs penalty kick however Sophomore forward Joe Greener?s penalty attempt was saved. That didn?t phase Greener, however, who continued to cause problems for Hesston and that hard work paid off in the second half as Greener (2) received a beautiful ball from Sophomore defender Will Pointon, which he slotted past the goalkeeper with confidence for his second goal of the season. Just after, Greener (3) scored again, this time from the penalty spot after Freshman Davin Flynn was brought down in the box. ?We looked dangerous all over the pitch,? Assistant Coach Tyler Rideout said, ?Greener showed his maturity after missing a penalty and then going and scoring 2 goals afterwards. Thats the reaction we are looking for in our players,? Rideout continued.

With ten minutes remaining in the match, Sophomore midfielder Jose Mejia (1) put the nail in the coffin as he scored a beautiful goal from 25 yards out, the first of his college career. Jose received a ball from Sophomore midfielder Ilari Seunavaara, he then beat two defenders, turned, and struck a laser into the bottom right corner leaving Hesston goalkeeper with no chance. ?I was happy for Jose to score because he is starting to see his potential,? Jordan Rideout said ?our whole team looked very sharp today and a few in particular really stepped up. We are looking forward to continuing this on Wednesday against a tough Dodge side.?
