Maverick Cross Country season starts off right in Colby

Friday, September 4th: Colby Community College

The Northwest Tech Maverick Cross Country Team participated in its first meet of the 2015 season. The meet was held at the Colby Community College campus and had 4 teams entered. Fort Hays State and Hastings College participated in addition to Northwest Tech and Colby Community College.

Purity Jepleting was the lone runner for the Lady Mavs setting a school record in 16:51.77 for her first 4k on US soil. This translates to a 21:20 5k time. The 5k equivalency is important because that's the Regional race distance for the women. It's also a distance that she's familiar with from Track season.

While the men's Regional course length will be 8k, the converted 5k time is important to the men to be able to compare their training now to their times from high school. The men's course was 3 miles in length. The lead runner for the Mavs was Jeffrey Lazo (freshman in Auto Tech from Denver, Colo.) in 16:09.22. He is now the record holder at the 3 mile event. This equates to a 16:45 5k converted time that would also be a school record for that event. Finishing 2nd for the Mavs was Jamall Theodile (freshman in Business Tech from New Iberia, La.) in 18:22.99, a 5k equivalent of 19:05. Third was Daniel Alvarado (freshman in CGT from Cozad, Neb.) in 18:25.63, a 5k equivalent of 19:07. Fourth for the Mavs was Ace Arteaga (freshman in Electrical Tech from Goodland, Kan.) in 18:32.61, a 5k equivalent of 19:13. The last scoring member of the team was returning runner Jameslee Banning (sophomore in Electrical Tech from Burden, Kan.) in 19:39.27, a 5k equivalent of 20:24. Finishing sixth for Northwest Tech was returning runner Jordan Ball (sophomore in Auto Tech from Bolivar, Mo.) in 21:26.61, a 5k equivalent of 22:15

Team points were as follows for the Men: FHSU 20, CCC 58, Hastings 70, and NWKTC 94. It was a great first meet. The Mavericks will be running at the Hutchinson Community College "Romp at the Ridge" at 10 am CST on Saturday, Sept 12th.
