Mavericks Partake in CCC Invitational

Friday, September 2, 2016 Colby Community College Invitational, Colby CC Campus

Teams:
FHSU C team
Colby CC
Garden City CC
Hastings
NWKTC
Unattached runners

Weather:
79*, SSE wind @ 18 mph, 58% humidity

Course:
Fairly level with long up and downhill stretches with little slope. 5K for both men and women.

Notes: 4 of 6 athletes ran here last year. This was Purity's first 5k on this course. Last run on this course for all men except Skylar who will return next year.

Women's race:
Purity Jepleting (SO, Gen Ed, Eldoret, Kenya) had a great first meet of her final semester at Northwest Tech. Purity's first mile was 6:48. Her second mile was 7:25. The second mile was ran very well. She was able to close a large gap despite running a slower second mile split. The second mile had a lot of long sloping hills. She ran an 8-minute mile the last 1.1 mile. Jepleting's time of 22:12.7 was good enough for 13th place of 26 female athletes. Tactically, she ran some great downhills. She will need to work on shorter, quicker uphill strides. This was a great first race of the year for her.

Men's race:

The biggest concern of the Men's Race Daniel Alvarado's (SO, CGT, Cozad, NE) knee injury at the 2 mile mark. Unfortunately, this will keep him out of competition for the next 2-3 weeks.

The race went very well for Jamall Theodile (SO, BT, New Iberia, LA), who ran with the lead pack most of the race. He finished in 15th place of 40 runners with a time of 18:14.6. Interestingly, this was the first year that the Colby CC course was a 5k, not just 3 miles (a tenth of a mile difference). Jamal's time this year over the longer 5k course was faster than his 3 mile time here last year!

Arron Arteaga (FR, WD, Goodland, KS) and Skylar Widmer (FR, CR, Marysville, KS) did well in their first collegiate races. Arron finished in 26th place in 19:11.5. He came into the season pretty out of shape and was very nervous for his first college race. After this race, all the men's races will be 8k. It'll be interesting to see how he does with a longer distance. Widmer also had a good first race of the season. He finished just 2 places behind Arron in 28th place in a time of 19:31.7. Arron and Skylar have been training together, and we hope that they will continue to push each other and improve their times.

Ace Arteaga (SO, EL, Goodland, KS) rounded out the 4 finishers for Northwest Tech. Ace is still not in good running shape after a long summer off. He finished in 40th place in a time of 22:29.3. With more practice and a lot of hard work, Ace's times will come down to where they were last year. We should see big improvements from him over the next several weeks.

Next competition is at home Friday, September 9th at Sugar Hills Golf Club. We are excited to host our first Cross Country meet.
