Lady Mavs Fall to Dodge City

The Lady Mavericks softball team traveled to Dodge City on Tuesday to continue conference play against the Conquistadors. The Mavericks fell short in both games of the double header, losing 5-20 in the first game and 6-27 in the second, bringing the team to 0-12 this season.

In game one, the Conquistadors took an early lead, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Lady Mavs answered back quickly, capitalizing on an error made by Dodge City's second basemen and rallying to score three runs in the top of the second inning. After giving up four more runs in the bottom of the second inning, freshman Mariya Tecumseh, determined to help her team answer back, hit her career-first solo home run right over the left fielder's head. Unfortunately, the Mavs went on to give up one more run in the third and eleven in the fourth to bring the score to 4-20. In their last set of three outs, the Lady Mavs were able to bring across one more run; however, it would not be enough to beat the Conquistadors with 17 hits.

In the second half of the double header, the Lady Mavs came out of the gate hungry and looking for their first conference win. They plated three runs in the first inning thanks to four base hits and smart baserunning by Mikaela Renteria, Ashlynn Miller, Cheylene Valdez-Asato, and Brynn Blanc. Dodge City came back to score seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. With 19 hits and zero errors, the Dodge City Conquistadors were able to score 20 more runs while only allowing the Lady Mavs to score three more between inning four and five.

While the scoreboard may not reflect the progress the Mavs would like to make, on Tuesday, the team scored more runs collectively than any other conference game this season so far. Head Coach Bailey Honne and the Lady Mavs plan to continue working together to score runs and minimize errors, which will allow them to compete in and win more games this season.

Looking ahead, the Lady Mavericks will travel to El Dorado, KS, to take on the Butler Grizzlies on Saturday.
