Softball Drops Home Opener

Softball played their first games at home against McCook Community College on Monday, losing the first game 1-10 and the second 0-13.

In the first game, the Lady Mavs were unable to get the bats going as they were only able to get two hits off pitcher Sadie Kahl. Mikaela Renteria started the game pitching four innings and only giving up five earned runs while recording three strikeouts. The defense struggled out of the gate with a couple errors but solidified in the later innings, not allowing the Indians to score in two of the five innings. Ashlynn Miller and Cheylene Valdez-Asato were the only two Mavericks that got hits on back-to-back at bats, with Chey driving in the lone run on an RBI single.

In game two of the double header, the Mavs were held scoreless as pitcher Graci Nelson threw a no-hitter against the Mavericks. Braxton Henderson got the start in the circle for the Lady Mavs but would be replaced by Chey after the first inning, finishing the game allowing 7 hits, 8 runs, 6 earned runs, 2 walks, and 3 stricke outs. The Mavs dropped game two 13-0.

Looking ahead, the Lady Mavs will look to bounce back as they travel to Dodge City today to take on the Lady Conqs.
