Lady Mavericks Split Games with Garden City

On Wednesday, March 13th, the Lady Mavericks earned their first conference win of the season with a hard-fought split against the Garden City Broncbusters. The Lady Mavs fell to the Broncbusters in game one, giving up 18 runs and only finding a way to bring one across the plate. The sole RBI in game one goes to Lauryen Reyes in the bottom of the fourth inning.

In game two, the Lady Mavs came out swinging early and often. After a leadoff single by Mikaela Renteria, catcher McKenna Grover hit her career first home run, giving the Lady Mavs a quick 2-0 lead. She followed up shortly after with another RBI double from Cheylene Valdez-Asato. After a few innings of play, the Broncbusters left the top of the third inning with a one-run lead; however, the Lady Mavs struck back in the bottom of the inning and tied the game thanks to a few key base hits and a single by Brynn Blanc. In the top of the fourth inning, the Broncbusters plated four, and the Mavericks continued to execute in the box, coming back to score five runs in the bottom of the inning. This string of runs was due to an RBI double from McKenna Grover, followed up by a two-run home run for Ashlynn Miller, also her career first. Immediately after, Mariya Tecumseh was able to draw a walk, and Cheylene Valdez-Asato followed that up with the Lady Mavs third home run on the day, giving them back the lead of 9-8. After giving up four runs in the fifth inning, the Lady Mavs continued to fight, scoring three more thanks to a double from Ashlynn Miller and a single from Cheylene Valdez-Asato, bringing the game to a 12-12 tie entering the sixth inning. Cheylene Valdez-Asato continued to deal on the mound, and her defense helped her keep the Broncbusters scoreless in the sixth. The Lady Mavs wanted more runs before heading into the seventh; they plated four. The Broncbusters continued to score in the top of the seventh; however, it was not enough, and the Lady Mavs came out victorious, winning 16-14.

The Mavericks will take on their next conference opponent on Saturday, March 16: the Barton Cougars in Great Bend.
