Mavs set records at the Alex Francis Classic
The men and women's Northwest Tech Track & Field teams competed in their second meet of the year at the Alex Francis Classic hosted by Fort Hays State University. This was a two day meet. On day one, the college throwing events and pole vault were contested, as well as the distance events. Day two featured the jumping events and sprints. This was the first scored meet that Northwest Tech has participated in this year.
The men's team scored 42 points and finished in 5th place out of 9 teams. Tech finished behind Fort Hays State, who won the meet with 277 points followed by Barton CC with 138, Colby CC with 85, and UNK with 47. Finishing behind Northwest Tech were Dodge City CC with 31, Colorado College with 12, UC-Colorado Springs with 11, and Kansas Wesleyan with 4.
The women's team finished in a tie for 7th place with the Hays Track club by scoring 13 points. There were 9 teams at the meet. Kansas Wesleyan finished behind Northwest Tech. Fort Hays State won the meet with 267 points followed by Colby CC with 78, Barton CC with 77, Dodge City CC with 74, UNK with 58, and Colorado College with 51.
Of the 17 events entered, school records were set or broken in 9, including a first-ever individual win for Northwest Tech.
Anthony Farrington, a freshman transfer student in Auto Tech from the Bahamas, won the Long Jump with a new school record of 6.42m. He edged out second place by just .01m. Farrington also improved his school record 100m time to 11.13 seconds, placing him 11th of 18.
Taeler Bowen, a sophomore in Welding from Las Vegas, NV, placed 8th of 16 in the 400m run with a new school record time of 52.57 seconds.
Ace Arteaga, a freshman from Goodland, KS in Electrical Tech, competed in the heavily contested 5000m run finishing 27th of 27 in a time of 19:45.77.
Jameslee Banning, a freshman from Burden, KS in Electrical Tech, placed 9th of 9 in the 3000m Steeplechase with a school record of 12:43.11. This was 2 seconds off his previous best time.
Sophomore Cosmetology student Noni Buckins from Las Vegas, NV participated in the 100m and 200m dashes. Her times were 15.07 and 31.49 seconds respectively. Her 100m time was slightly improved over last meet and her 200m time was .02 seconds slower. Buckins placed 5th of 6 in the Long Jump with a jump of 3.62m.
It was a rough evening for the vaulters. Neither freshman Computer Graphics Technology student from Goodland, Kan., Jordan Knitig nor freshman Automotive Technology student Jordan Ball from Bolivar, Mo., was able to make opening height.
Kord Albers, a freshman in Engineering Tech from Hays, Kan., improved his school record in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:03.54.
Patrick Brown, a freshman Engineering Tech student from the Bahamas, placed 4th of 4 in the Triple jump with 11.02m.
Freshman Diesel Tech student Tyler Trout from Lamar, Colo., placed 5th of 6 in discus with a throw of 2.50m. He also placed 4th of 8 in the Shot Put with a throw of 14.52m. Both of these events are new school records for him.
Freshman Collision Repair student Adam Tate from Castle Rock, Colo., placed 6th of 6 in discus with a throw of 37.43m. Tate placed 8th of 8 in shot put with a throw of 10.93m, an improvement from his mark two weeks ago. He placed 3rd of 4 in hammer with a new school record throw of 41.90m, improving by nearly 2 meters.
Freshman Cosmetology student from Lamar, Colo., Allison Sena made her Northwest Tech Track debut in discus setting a school record of 33.45m, and placing 5th of 7. Sena placed 6th of 11 in shot put to set the school record of 11.04m.
