Women's Basketball Win Over Garden City on Sophomore Day

Northwest Tech Women's Basketball won over Garden City on Sophomore Day, 75-74. The Lady Mavs got out to a slow start, with Garden City getting out to a 10-point lead early in the game with the score 9-18 at the end of the first. The second quarter saw the Mavericks close the gap in the last two minutes, pulling within three points with the half-time score at 32-35.

In the second half, there was a lot of back-and-forth, with the Mavs coming out on top with two clutch free throws from Tyjhanae Penny to seal the game with just under a second left. The difference in the game for the Lady Mavs came down to outscoring Garden in the paint, committing fewer turnovers, and more second chance points. Neither team shot well from beyond the arc, with Garden shooting 1-3 and Northwest Tech shooting 1-25.

"We didn't play our best game, especially the first quarter going into the game," commented Coach Kassongo. "We have to do a better job and come ready to compete from the start. We didn't shoot the ball very well the entire game. We allowed them to step on the free throw line too many times. However, despite everything, the girls were able to fight hard and did a good job controlling the rebound. The team was calm, collected, and stayed locked in until the very last second. I'm very proud of the entire team for staying together and for pulling off this big win."

The Lady Mavericks' next game will be this Thursday against Seward County Community College.
