Women's Basketball Win Over Cowley

Women's Basketball Win Over Cowley

Northwest Tech Women's Basketball picked up their first conference win on Wednesday, beating the Cowley College Tigers 79-75.

The game felt like a pick-up basketball game in the first quarter, with the Lady Mavericks shooting 56% from the three-point line, led by Serena Lee, who shot 4-6 from beyond the arc in the first. Cowley also shot well, shooting 40% from the outside. The game was back-and-forth for most of the first until Tech went on a 14-2 scoring run to put them in a double-digit lead. The second quarter continued the same way with excellent shooting, yet Cowley managed to keep the scoring relatively even. Northwest Tech would go into halftime leading, 50-37.

In the second half, the Mavericks maintained a steady pace, retaining their lead throughout the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Tech was able to extend their lead out to 19 points, just past the midway point. However, the tide would turn when Cowley went on an 18-2 run, bringing the game to within four points, causing Tech to call a timeout with less than a minute left in the game. Following a free throw from Serena Lee, Cowley would then score a layup with 38 seconds left, calling a timeout, down only three points. Coming out of the timeout, the Lady Mavs were then able to break Cowley's press to score an easy layup before Cowley returned with one of their own. However, time would run out for the Lady Tigers after Tyjhanae Penny made a free throw, and they failed to score on their final possession.

"We stopped their main source of scoring, which I knew would be key to picking up a win," commented Coach Baker. "The ladies followed the adjustment in the scouting report perfectly. Serena Lee hauled in a 24-point and a 10-rebound effort; Torrai Logan went for a season-high of 11 points; and Alex Thompson put up another career night with 20 points after scoring 30 against Cloud. Everyone stepped up, and it'll take a total team effort to continue to compete in this league. Northwest Tech women's basketball is on the rise, and I'm proud to be a part of it."

Northwest Tech's next game will be on the road against Butler Community College on Saturday.
