Lady Mavs come up short in tough season opener 4-0 to NJC

The season opener for the Northwest Kansas Technical College Lady Mavericks ended as a 4-0 defeat to Northeastern Junior College from Colorado.

NJC opened the scoring in the 21st minute and took a 1-0 lead into halftime. The Lady Mavs generated several offensive chances with freshman N'Mandria Reynolds and sophomores Sam Teller and Jackie Rivas all finding the frame to no avail.

An unfortunate red card handicapped the Lady Mavs in the second half as they gutted out the final 45 minutes with 10 players. Sophomore goalkeeper Arion Jackson made multiple second half stops but NJC added three more goals in the final thirty minutes.

Head coach Danny Main said postgame that this team has come a long ways in progressing over the past three weeks.

"For our first game with this group, we competed well," Main said. "It was our first full 90 minutes, and for the majority of our roster it was their first collegiate soccer match. We worked extremely hard and set a good benchmark for ourselves moving forward."

The next Lady Mavs contest will be Thursday, Sept. 1 in Denver against the University of Colorado-Denver. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30pm MT.
