Steady improvements continue at "Terry Masterson Classic"

Saturday, September 12th, 2015- Hutchinson Community College (Prairie Ridge Park)

On a perfect September day, the Northwest Tech Maverick Cross Country team executed outstanding performances at the inaugural Terry Masterson Classic, formerly known as the Romp at the Ridge. Other than the name change, no other significant changes were made to the course or competition, however there were about 20 fewer participants in the men's and women's races.

Winning the women's race was Lydia Mato from Barton CC in a time of 20:08.1. She led a fellow teammate through the course coaching her the entire way, running just fast enough to win. For the Mavericks, Purity Jepleting (Freshman, Medical Assistant) finished in 6th place and was the 4th Region VI finisher in a school record time of 21:18.2. This time was Jepleting's Cross Country career PR. She was about 20 seconds faster at the 5K on the track this past spring with no hills to slow her down.

The winning women's team was Barton CC with 37 points, followed by Dodge City with 48, Pratt with 65, Hesston with 102, Hutchinson with 109, and Garden City with 109 as well.

In the men's race, Sampson Laari of Barton CC finished first with a time of 26:56.9. Much like teammate, Mato, he hung back during the first 3 miles with his team, talking and coaching them. The remaining 3000m, he left the pack in the dust on his way to the finish.

Finishing first for the Mavericks was Jeffrey Lazo (Freshman, Automotive Technology). He placed 9th overall and was the 8th Region VI finisher with a school record time of 29:05.2. Finishing 2nd for the Mavericks was Jamall Theodile (Freshman, Business Technology) in 30th place overall in a time of 30:49.7. Ace Arteaga (Freshman, Electrical Technology) was the Mavs next finisher in 48th place overall with a time of 32:53.2. Jameslee Banning (Sophomore, Electrical Technology) was in 50th place for the Mavericks in a time of 33:03.3. Daniel Alvarado (Freshman, Computer Graphics Technology) was the final finisher for the Mavericks with a time of 33:37.2 to finish 53rd.

The men's team score was 177, putting them in 8th place of 8 teams. This was 20 points away from 7th place Hesston College. Barton CC won with 44 points, followed Hutchinson with 54, Garden City with 93, Pratt with 115, Dodge City with 126, Tabor College with 145.
