Lynum named Finalist for US Marine Corps/WBCA National Coach of the Year

Lynum named Finalist for US Marine Corps/WBCA National Coach of the Year

The Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced Head Coach Kevin Lynum as a finalist for the United States Marine Corps/WBCA National Coach of the Year. Lynum has just completed his first season with the Northwest Kansas Technical College Mavericks.  This season under Lynum's tutelage the team established a new single season wins record of 28 wins.

Lynum, who was hired May 10, to lead the Mavericks, walked into an empty locker room when he joined the Mavericks, with players graduating and parting to begin new journeys. Although things didn't seem favorable, the Mavericks and their fans in the greater tri-state that Northwest Tech serves soon realized they were in for a treat.

The Gainesville, FL native Coach Lynum and his team has obliterated every record in Northwest Tech women's basketball history. The team set the wins streak record (17), point per game (88), steals (456), total points (2612), and produced a top 10 scoring offense in the nation. The Mavericks held opponents to 43.7 points per game while averaging a rebound margin of 20+ over opponents per game.

How the Mavericks stacked up statistically in the country:

- 28-1 record, most wins in school history

- Northwest Tech was ranked 5th nationally in total points scored (2531)

- 6th nationally in points per game (87.3)

- 6th nationally in FG made per game (32.7)

- 5th nationally in FG attempts per game (74.8)

- 8th nationally in offensive rebounds per game (19.7)

- 7th nationally in defensive rebounds per game (30.8)

- 1st nationally in rebound margin (+23.1)

- 3rd nationally in total rebounds per game (50.5)

- 6th nationally in steals (15.5)

- 9th nationally in assists per game (18.9)

- 3rd nationally in points allowed per game (42.2)

This season, two of the Lady Mavericks were named J/CC WBCA All American Honorable Mention (Tran Brown and Juliet James). Lynum is currently assisting all five sophomores with their placement into four-year universities.  The Lady Mavericks ended their season at a 28-2 mark, which was enough for Coach Lynum to tie the career wins mark in Northwest Tech Women's Basketball history. Coach Lynum credits all his success to his players, staff, family, and most importantly God! "I have an incredible amount of faith", said Lynum.

Great job Coach Lynum on this great achievement. Go Mavericks!
