Elevation affects Mavericks in Denver

On a beautiful Saturday morning, the men and women's Cross Country team traveled up the hill to neighboring Colorado to compete in the Metro State Roadrunner Invitational. The team knew the competition would be very tough, as would the elevation.
The first race of the day was the women's 6k race. This was a big change for Maverick runner Purity Jepleting (FR, Medical Assistant, Kenya). Jepleting finished 50th out of 77 in a time of 26:42. This was 6 minutes off her 5k PR from the previous week of 20:38.
The winning time for the women's race was 21:40. The winning team was CSU-Pueblo with 29 points. Northwest Tech was the only 2-year college attending the meet.
For the men, Jeff Lazo (FR, Automotive Technology, Denver, Colo.) covered the 8k course in 29:06 to beat his goal time by 9 seconds. He placed 52nd out of 94 runners.
Finishing second for the Maverick Men was Jamall Theodile (FR, Business Technology, New Iberia, La.). He covered the 8k course in 31:05 to beat his goal time by 12 seconds. He placed 75th overall.
Finishing 3rd for the Mavericks, 80th place overall, was Ace Arteaga (FR, Electrical Technology, Goodland, Kan.) with a time of 31:48. He beat his goal time of 32:22 by 34 seconds.
Just behind Arteaga in 81st place overall was Freshman Daniel Alvarado (FR, Computer Graphics Technology, Cozad, Neb.). Alvarado beat his goal time by 3 seconds to run a 32:13.
Finishing 5th for the Mavericks was Sophomore Jordan Ball (Automotive Technology, Bolivar, Mo.). Ball finished 89th of 94, covering the course in 35:19.
The winning time for the men's race was 25:37. Winning the men's team title was CSU-Pueblo with 50 points, followed by Metro State's 52, UC-Colorado Springs 66, New Mexico Highlands 83, Regis 118, Fort Lewis 151, and Northwest Tech 317.
The Maverick men and women are in action again October 10th at the Fort Hays State Open in Victoria, KS.
