Men's Basketball Win in Overtime against Dodge City

Northwest Tech Men's Basketball won in overtime on Saturday, defeating the Dodge City Conquistadors 89-88 on Sophomore Day, marking the Mavericks first win against Dodge since February of 2020. 

Dodge City got out to a quick 11-point lead to start the game, surging ahead 15-4 within the first 6 minutes. Tech would call a quick timeout before going to work, as they proceeded to go on an 11-4 run before Dodge City called a timeout with 10:16 left in the first half. Both teams would continue to go back-and-forth, with Northwest Tech slowly closing in, eventually tying the game before going into halftime down one point, 41-42. 

The second half would mirror the first, with Northwest Tech briefly taking a three-point lead six minutes in before the Conqs took control of the game again. The Mavericks would keep Dodge's lead in the single digits as they slowly worked their way back into a one-possession game. The game would eventually come down to free throws, as Emarquis Jones made two to force the game into overtime. 

Free throws would continue to be the deciding factor in overtime, with Tech making five of five while Dodge City made three of five. Sophomore Keyishon Miller would win the game for the Mavericks, making an and-one layup and draining his free throw to put Northwest Tech up by one with 14 seconds left. Dodge was unable to make a last second shot after missing a layup, finalizing the score. 

Looking at the stats, both Dodge City and Northwest Tech had an almost identical field goal percentage of 43.1%. However, the real difference was again, at the free throw line, with Tech making 29-34 while the Conqs made 16-21. Keyishon Miller had another excellent game, scoring 32 points while sinking 13 of 13 free throws. Freshman Idris Williams also had a career-high 16 points.

The Mavericks will now look to increase their win streak on Wednesday as they face Hutchinson Community College at home.
