Lady Tigers Win Over Independence
Fort Hays Tech Northwest women's basketball team earned their first conference victory on Saturday, defeating the Independence Community College Pirates 75-67.
Independence would get the scoring started, taking an early 7-point lead, four minutes into the game. Both teams traded baskets throughout the first quarter, with the Lady Tigers managing to narrow the deficit to two points by the quarter's end. The Lady Tigers would take control of the game to start the second quarter, as they quickly took the lead. The Pirates would battle their way back to within one point and then later trade leads as Fort Hays Tech Northwest would go into halftime leading by three points, 36-33.
Independence would strike first again to open the second half, quickly claiming the lead. However, it would be short-lived for the Pirates, as FHNW quickly got its offense rolling, going on a 15-4 scoring run, with the score now at 51-39. By the end of the third quarter, the Lady Tigers had built an 11-point lead, 55-44.
The Pirates would attempt to make a comeback in the fourth quarter with their leading scorer scoring 12 of their 23 points. However, Indy's comeback would not prove to be effective with the Tigers continuing to run an effective offense, allowing Tech to walk away with the victory.
The Lady Tigers would have four players in double figures, with sophomore Traysha Newsome leading the way with 19 points. Freshman Al'asia Brown also played well, with a 10-point, 14-rebound double-double.
FHNW women's basketball will return to competition on Thursday, January 23rd, to take on the Coffeyville Red Ravens.
